The Velvamatics are at a good start. That’s weird, ‘cuz I’ve been seeing them (not in this configuration) for two years and now they’re at a good starting point. It’s reasonable, they’re seventeen. Their garage rock climaxes at its noisiest, and with a few less repeats they’d be handling some nice fuzzy econo-rock.

Are there still all-ages shows in Vancouver? The Emergency Room doesn’t count; letting anyone in doesn’t make it All-Ages. Kyle and Kohl’s final show reminded me that I really do hate teenagers. The media glorifies us, but really, we’re idiots.

We need more. Over two hundred kids sludging through their first week back to school and letting it go on Friday night. The enthusiasm was encouraging. Apparently some people aren’t jaded enough to stand stone-faced, half-dead while fluid fun is discharged at the front. If these kids start to show up when You Say Party isn’t playing maybe Abbotsford won’t be so unbearable.

With my name surprisingly on the guestlist, I walked in and saved my $8 which was actually probably about how much this show was theoretically worth. Thankfully, the environment was a lot nicer than the last McCallum Activity Center show (with D.O.A.), despite the presence of a security guard. A lot fewer idiots showed up to this show, which featured a lot better bands. The security guard wasn’t a jerk either, he basically just guarded the beer garden.

O'Scene

Originally scheduled as Fun 100 and You Say Party! We Say Die! on Thunderbird Radio Hell, Fun 100 dropped out and left You Say Party to themselves. In a two songs, interview, repeat format You Say Party played great and made some memorable quotes. An extremely solid set was latched together with a mispronunciation of the name Stefani, a rant on Don Cherry (Rock’em Sock’em 5 is the best), and a discussion on alcohol vs. cough syrup brought on by Krista’s request for a bathroom break.

The second release from these ex-Abbotsforders starts out with something completely different than what their fans are used to. Overture and the first minute of Cold Hands! Hot Bodies! bring us something entirely different then we’re used, to the point of making me wonder if I had gotten the right cd. The rest of the cd is standard YSP! madness. Every song has a catch and every catch is lethal. Any of these songs could be hits, given proper exposure. When the band got together, their plan was to do something different. While keyboard driven dance-punk isn’t all that uncommon, You Say Party does a stellar job of it. The album is carried on Krista’s shoulders, and everyone has their moment to shine.

The last show of You Say Party!’s CD Release weekend started off with a set by Hot Loins. I really don’t understand their appeal. They sounded awful, but then again, both times I’ve seen them it’s been at Mesa “doesn’t adjust balance” Luna. Their set seemed to go on for too long, but once it was over, the show really started.
